Frequently asked questions
If something isn’t covered here, it’s a gap in this page, not a secret.
How much does Small actually cost?
Two ways, and you pick which fits your business. Solo is free: nothing to create or send an invoice, and when a customer pays one, we take 0.5% of the invoice before tax — never more than $10, however large it is. If an invoice never gets paid, we never take anything from it. Pro drops that fee to zero and charges a subscription instead: $7 a seat a month billed annually ($84 a year), or $9 a month billed month to month, with unlimited seats. See pricing for a worked example and every limit on each plan.
What do I get with Pro that Solo doesn't have?
A second person, first of all — Solo is one seat, and Pro has no seat limit. Pro also adds recurring invoices and retainers, API access, integrations beyond Stripe, detailed reports, and removing the “Made with Small” line from your invoices. And it drops our 0.5% fee to zero, on every payment, for as long as the subscription is active. Automatic payment reminders aren’t on this list because they’re not a Pro perk — every invoice gets them, free, on Solo too. Every business starts on Solo — Pro is offered the moment you invite a second person.
How do I get paid?
Your customer opens a link to the invoice — no account needed — and pays through Stripe Checkout. Card anywhere; bank transfer as well if you and they are in the US, which costs them nothing and costs you a great deal less than a card on a large invoice. The money goes to your own Stripe account, minus our fee.
Who holds the money — Small or Stripe?
Stripe. Your business connects its own Stripe account, and payments are charged directly to it. Small never holds customer funds — we take our fee out of each charge as it happens.
Is payment processing included in the 0.5%?
No, on Solo or Pro. Stripe bills it separately, at their standard rates, straight to your own account — the same as it would be for any other online payment. We don't mark it up and we don't see any of it. Two things worth knowing: Small's own fee is capped at $10 on Solo and is zero on Pro, but Stripe's share is never capped, and it is much smaller on a bank transfer than on a card. On a large invoice that difference dwarfs ours.
Who's responsible if a customer disputes a charge?
You are. Because payments go to your own Stripe account, you're the merchant of record and you handle disputes in your own Stripe dashboard, the same as with any other Stripe-connected business.
Can I take recurring or subscription payments?
Not yet. Recurring invoices and retainers — billing your own customers on a schedule — are a Pro entitlement that hasn't shipped. One-off invoices work today on Solo and Pro alike. This is separate from Small's own Pro subscription, which is what you'd pay Small, not something Small helps you charge someone else.
What currencies can I invoice in?
You choose one in Settings, from eleven including sterling, euros and US dollars, and every invoice you send uses it. Invoices you've already sent keep the currency they were sent in, so changing it never rewrites your history.
Do you store card numbers?
No. Card details are entered on Stripe's own Checkout page and never pass through Small's servers.
Is there a free trial, or a card required to sign up?
There's no trial because there's nothing to trial — sending invoices is free for as long as you use Small. No card is required to create an account.
