Frequently asked questions

There are two plans, and you choose. Solo costs nothing to make or send invoices. When a customer pays one, we take 0.5% of the invoice before tax, and never more than $10. If an invoice never gets paid, we take nothing. Pro has no fee on payments. Instead it’s $7 a seat a month billed yearly ($84 a year), or $9 month to month, with as many seats as you need. See pricing for a worked example and every limit on each plan.

Room for more people, mainly. Solo has one seat and Pro has no limit. Pro also adds recurring invoices, retainers, API access, and the option to remove “Made with Small” from your invoices. And there’s no 0.5% fee on any payment while you’re subscribed. Automatic reminders aren’t on this list because every plan gets them, Solo included. Everyone starts on Solo, and you can switch to Pro any time from Settings → Plan & billing, even if you only need one seat.

Your customer opens the invoice link and pays through Stripe Checkout. They don't need an account. Anyone can pay by card. If the invoice is in US dollars and your Stripe account is in the US, they can also pay by bank transfer (ACH). That's free for them, and on a big invoice it costs you far less than a card. The money goes to your own Stripe account, minus our fee.

Stripe. You connect your own Stripe account, and payments go straight into it. Small never holds your customers' money. On Solo, we take our fee out of each payment as it's made.

A card payment goes straight to your Stripe account and reaches your bank on your Stripe payout schedule, which you set in Stripe, not in Small. A bank transfer takes up to four business days to clear first. Until it does, the invoice shows the payment as clearing, not paid. After that it pays out the same way.

No, on either plan. Stripe bills processing separately, at its standard rates, straight to your own account, as it would for any online payment. We don't add to it and we never see it. A bank transfer costs 0.8%, up to $5, plus $1.50 if your customer verifies their bank instantly, which most do. A failed bank payment costs $4 and a disputed one costs $15. Two things worth knowing. Our fee stops at $10 an invoice on Solo and is zero on Pro, but Stripe's card fee has no cap. And Stripe takes much less on a bank transfer than on a card, so on a big invoice, how your customer pays matters far more than our fee does. On US-dollar invoices you can also have your customer cover all or half of Stripe's fee.

You are. Payments go to your own Stripe account, so you're the merchant of record. You handle disputes in your Stripe dashboard, like any business that uses Stripe.

Yes, on Pro. Press Repeat on an invoice you've sent and choose how often: weekly, every two weeks, monthly, quarterly or yearly. Small raises the same invoice again on schedule. Each one is saved as a draft for you to check, unless you choose to have it emailed to your client automatically. Solo sends one-off invoices only. (This isn't the same as Small's own Pro subscription, which is what you pay us.)

You choose one in Settings, from eleven including US dollars, sterling and euros, and every invoice you send uses it. Invoices you've already sent keep their currency, so changing it never rewrites old invoices.

No. Your customer types their card details into Stripe's own checkout page, and they never touch our servers.

There's nothing to trial. Sending invoices is free for as long as you use Small, and you don't need a card to sign up.
